Press Release October 16, 2008
Mark Reau, General Manager of The Gordon Lumber Company announced the closing of the Company’s retail facilities in Lindsey and Oak Harbor effective at the close of business on Thursday, October 16, 2008. Mr. Reau stated this decision was made by the Company’s Board of Directors after a thorough analysis of the eleven store locations, its present operating plan, and its long term goals and objectives. These changes are consistent with the company’s strategic plan of providing exceptional customer service to both retail and contractor customers while generating a fair return to the shareholders.
The Gordon Lumber Company, which is headquartered in Fremont is an employee owned company that began in Oak Harbor in 1868. Mr. Reau noted that the operation of the company’s truss manufacturing plant, distribution center, installed insulation division, solid surface countertop division and truck maintenance center will remain in Oak Harbor. He further pointed out that customers of the two facilities being closed will be served by company stores located in Fremont, Genoa, Port Clinton, and Tiffin. He indicated that an analysis of the Company’s customer base showed that most would still be within 20 minutes of a Gordon Lumber store location.
Mr. Reau stated that this decision will, in the end, bring long-term benefits to both the customers they serve and shareholders, and by improving their efficiencies during this very difficult housing economy, Gordon Lumber will emerge in a much stronger competitive position
Mr. Reau expressed his appreciation to the Company’s customers and employees for their loyalty and support and indicated that management and staff would be working very hard to minimize the impact of the changes. He further pointed out that the company had opened a new 8,000 square foot showroom outside of Perrysburg in December 2007 in response to the changing needs of both retail and contractor customers and the challenging economic environment.
